The land of ice and fire

Iceland — a name that instantly evokes one word: nature. From waterfalls and massive glaciers to black sand beaches, northern lights, geysers, and year-round volcanic activity, this land is wild and unforgettable. But there's more to Iceland than just its landscapes. It’s also world-famous for its salmon fishing, home to one of the most legendary rivers: the East Rangá.

Flowing freely from the slopes of Mount Hekla all the way to the sea, the East Rangá runs about 60 km. This river boasts an average catch size of 5–10 lbs, with some specimens reaching 14–20 lbs — the largest in the system.

Weather: Summer on the East Rangá brings mild weather, with temperatures between 8–15°C (46–59°F) and nearly 24 hours of daylight. Conditions are generally stable, though light rain and quick shifts between sun and clouds are common. Winds are calmer than in other seasons, making it the best time to fish.

Aurora Lodge

Sitting on a green grass balcony facing the East Ranga, Mount Hekla and Eyjafjallajokull volcano, Aurora Lodge displays a modern nordic architecture combining wood, metal and a massive amount of glass. Classy, modern and with an outstanding management and staff team.

The main house will welcome anglers with a spacious entrance hall with a couple of sofas and tea tables. On the left hand side you’ll see the small fly shop equipped with everything you can expect from a lodge fly shop. As you keep going, soon enough you'll see the bar on the same side, with a whole range of top quality beverages, inviting you to sit and relax for the first couple of hours at the lodge. Opposite the bar, is the dining room, a spacious and luminous area where all meals take place. Breakfast as well as lunch are a fully loaded buffet, different from dinner which is a different outstanding dish every night.

Itinerary (8 full fishing sessions)

Day 1 You'll be landing on Keflavik that same day early in the morning and driven to the lodge before lunch. As you arrive you'll get your room assigned, you can either get unpacked or chil at the lodge’s bar before lunch. After lunch, your guide will help you set up your rod and get everything ready for the first fishing session, departure at 15:00hs and fish till 20:00hs. Time to go back to the lodge to enjoy the hot tubs or just head to the bar to listen to people lying about lost fish and showing fish pictures. Dinner is always around 21:30hs.

Day 2, 3 & 4 Breakfast will be served from 06:30am and you are meant to be in the car before 08:00 am. Morning session finishes at 13:00hs when you go back for lunch, a quick power nap and back in your waders at 15:00 to go test your skills again for the next 5 hours.

Day 5 You’ll have regular breakfast, morning session and lunch just like everyday (maybe fishing session can cut down for ½ an hour or so). After lunch youll hop in the transfer car or your own rental and call it a week.

The fishing

First couple weeks, (like any other spring run salmon river) catching numbers are lower but compensated with quality. The bigger fish are the first ones to come in with the big tides of June, strong, salty and stunning looking. They are no doubt the East Ranga’s treasures. As the season keeps going, river keeps packing up with fish. There’s a big push of grilse (salmon between the 2 to 6 pound mark) that run somewhere early august.

Due to water temperature, fish dont tend to eat very aggressive, but then they'll play stronger and for longer than scottish, russian and canadian salmon!

ROTATION

At your first lunch at the lodge, you or your fishing partner will take part in a draw, during which the first beats for that afternoon are randomly assigned. This sets the fixed beat rotation for the rest of your fishing sessions. The full rotation includes 8 fishing sessions, each 5 hours long: the first takes place on the afternoon of your arrival, followed by 3 full days of fishing, and the final session on the morning of your departure.

Morning sessions run from 08:00 to 13:00, followed by lunch and a short rest at the lodge. The afternoon session begins at 15:00 and ends at 20:00.

Assisted spawning and smolts releasing program

Iceland has some of the most developed and sophisticated salmon ranching programs in the world. Many rivers, for various reasons, rely on assisted spawning each year to ensure consistently high numbers of fish returning from the ocean.

The East Rangá, in particular, faces two natural challenges that prevent successful 100% wild spawning: extremely cold water and fine volcanic sand, which tends to wash away and disrupt natural redds (spawning nests).

During the fishing season, most large salmon—both male and female—are carefully kept alive in a holding box placed in the river with steady flowing water. These fish are later transported to the hatchery, where eggs and milt (sperm) are extracted and mixed for fertilization.

Once the eggs hatch, the fry are raised until they reach a few centimeters in size and are then returned to the river. There, they are carefully nurtured until they reach the smolt stage and are ready to begin their journey to the ocean—where they grow over the winter before returning to the river as mature salmon.

TACKLE

100% of the fishing is done wading on volcanic sand and small rocks, Spey rods paired up with any modern floating head with a full set of sinking tips on different lengths and densities. Most leader material recommended are 15, 18 and 20 lbs fluorocarbon.

In terms of flies, your clasic medium and big salmon tubes will work. Cascades, Alley Shrimps, Sneldas, norwegian wing style flies and Sunray Shadows will do the trick. It's always clever to have a wide range of red/black francis, different weights and sizes will help you increase your chances.

For your tubes we highly recommend top quality doubles and trebles, size 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10’s.

Now, when water drops and clears, you’ll be going down to classic scottish flies tied on doubles and trebles. Icelanders are well known for sight catching salmon in the clearest of the conditions, for that reason a good selection of tiny Icelandic doubles and trebles is also recommended.
