GETTING TO KNOW US

Finding a genuinely “undiscovered” fly fishing destination isn’t easy these days. In fact, twin brothers, Alex and Nico Trochine have been scouting South America in search of one for years. In February 2015 they made an exploratory expedition along the central Chilean coast chasing rumors of massive King Salmon populating many of the rivers in the region.

They sampled several rivers on their explorations – many of which have runs of Kings but were not, what they felt, were fly fishing friendly. It wasn’t until they landed on the last river of the trip when they knew that they had discovered, what might possibly be, South America’s King fishing Shangri-la. Blown away by the jaw-dropping scenery, fish-ability of the river, average size (25-50 lbs.), and healthy population of salmon, they decided that this river was the place to set up their operation.

THE CAMP ITSELF

Austral Kings camp was originally literally, a camp. Everybody stayed in big canvas solid and spacious tents. But last year a big upgrade happened. Tents for guests were replaced with cabins.

One room for every two anglers with twin beds, bathroom with hot shower and running electricity the same hours as the rest of the camp. Based still on the same location, the camp is a few steps away from the river, a beautiful greengrass meadow was chosen as the base spot.

Despite not having the classic tents for sleeping in, the camp still keeps the big tent where breakfast, dinner, drinks and fish stories go on along the week, keeping the Austral Kings vibe as natural and intimate as the first group that ever swung flies on this system.

TACKLE

Like most salmon fishing in the world, it's done mainly with spey rods. Anywhere between 12’ and 14’, paired up with a big reel will get the job done. With a nice blend of skagit heads, a wide set of tips and full sinking lines you will be covered for all the fishing conditions. Classic west coast and Canadian chinook or steelhead fly selections do work very well, however we have a couple of well kept secrets that we like to save for our guests, so if you want them in your fly box, just let us know.
